It is bordered by the Cape Province to the South and South-east, Natal to the North-east and the Orange Free State to the West and South-west . Gun War, (1880–81), Southern African war in which the Sotho (also Basuto or Basotho) people of Basutoland (present-day Lesotho) threw off the rule by the Cape Colony. It is one of the few examples in Southern African history of black Africans’ winning a conflict with colonial powers in the 19th century. From the late 1810s, the Sotho peoples amalgamated into a defensive state under the leadership of Moshoeshoe, particularly after the Boer invasions (the Great Trek) of the mid-1830s.

Print is from an antique incomplete art book. One margin edge is rough from being bound in the book. Along with the other High Commission territories in Southern Africa, Basutoland departed from the usual colonial omnibus design for the Victory series of 1945. Instead the Victory stamps of the Union of South Africa were released with a suitable overprint.

As a result, Basutoland was brought under direct authority of Queen Victoria, via the High Commissioner, and run by an Executive Council presided over by a series of British Resident Commissioners.
