Born in Washington, D.C., Otelia Cromwell was also the first African American woman to receive a degree from Yale University. A teacher and scholar, Cromwell accomplished her most significant work, The Life of Lucretia Mott Otelia Cromwell Day is a Smith College community-wide celebration! Fall classes are usually cancelled and an annual slate of workshops, lectures, films and entertainment are convened to honor Smith’s first African American graduate.

Otelia Cromwell (April 8, 1874 – April 25, 1972) was a distinguished scholar and Professor of English Language and Literature at Miner Teachers College.She was the first African American to graduate from Smith College, receiving a B.A. in Classics. 2019-12-19 · Adelaide always talked about Otelia in glowing terms and with words of admiration and gratitude for her role as a “Mothering Aunt.” Once when she led a workshop at Otelia Cromwell Day at about age 95, she couldn’t understand why students had not read her book about Otelia if they really expected to ask good questions.

She is also the aunt of Adelaide M. Cromwell, the first Black instructor at Smith College. This November, Smith College will celebrate the 30 th anniversary of Otelia Cromwell Day. Cromwell passed on April 25, 1972.
